Portugal Urges Israel to Adhere to International Court of Justice Rulings

Portugal’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Joao Gomes Cravinho has expressed deep concern over Israel’s attacks on Gaza. Speaking at the 60th International Munich Security Conference, Cravinho emphasized the importance of Israel’s compliance with international law and the need for increased access to humanitarian aid for Palestinians.
Cravinho urged Israel to heed the requests of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and called for a ceasefire and more access to humanitarian aid. He also addressed Portugal’s stance on continuing to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), stating that the investigation into personnel allegedly involved in attacks against Israel by Hamas should not lead to the suspension of support for the institution.
UNRWA, which has been providing humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees since 1950, has come under scrutiny following claims by Israeli officials that its personnel were involved in attacks against Israel. Several countries have suspended their funds for UNRWA following these allegations.
Despite the controversy, the agency continues to support millions of Palestinian refugees in need. The ongoing situation highlights the complex dynamics in the region and the challenges faced by humanitarian organizations operating in conflict zones.
