Possible Solution: Israel has the ability to withdraw from the corridor
Diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip are ongoing, with the Philadelphia Corridor being a key point of contention. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently stated that they would continue their presence in the corridor, emphasizing that the war would achieve its goals through it.
However, reports from negotiators suggest that Israel may not be as steadfast on this issue. Israeli officials have indicated that they could potentially withdraw from the Philadelphia Corridor in the second phase of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement, despite Netanyahu’s assertions.
The Israeli state television channel KAN reported that Mossad Director David Barnea informed the mediators of Israel’s plan to withdraw from the corridor in the second phase of the agreement. Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer also suggested that Israel may leave the door open for withdrawal in the second phase.
While some in the country support the negotiations, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has openly declared his opposition to them, stating that he is working to stop the talks with Hamas.
In response to Netanyahu’s claims about weapons smuggling, the Foreign Ministry issued a statement calling his allegations lies aimed at manipulating public opinion. The ministry criticized Netanyahu for trying to derail the ceasefire talks and also condemned his accusations against Egypt.
Meanwhile, a lawsuit has been filed in the USA against six Hamas leaders, including Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh, in connection with recent attacks. The indictment covers attacks allegedly carried out by Hamas over the years.
Resignations in Israeli organizations continue, with the Commander of the Israeli Army’s Land Forces and the head of the Police Intelligence Unit both stepping down. These resignations come amidst tensions within the organization following recent appointments by the far-right National Security Minister.
