President Mirziyoyev drives for fair competition and WTO membership in transparent discussions
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev is actively working towards positioning Uzbekistan on the global trade map by setting the goal of joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) by 2026. In a recent dialogue with entrepreneurs, the President emphasized the importance of creating a level playing field for competition and integrating into the global economy.
During the discussion, President Mirziyoyev highlighted the need for a competitive environment in the domestic market and expanding opportunities for international market access. He noted the significant increase in exports over the past seven months, with 1,610 new companies entering foreign markets. Steps towards WTO membership have been taken, with negotiations ongoing to ensure a smooth transition.
The President underlined that joining the WTO is a strategic choice aligned with Uzbekistan’s long-term reforms. Despite concerns about increased imports flooding the market, President Mirziyoyev reassured that import duties will remain in place and negotiations with WTO members are progressing positively.
Furthermore, Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of enhancing product and service quality to meet international standards and secure a strong position in foreign markets. He mentioned upcoming changes in food safety regulations to streamline processes for entrepreneurs and minimize bureaucratic obstacles.
In terms of competition, Uzbekistan’s share in imports compared to neighboring countries remains relatively low. To address this, reforms have been initiated to eliminate exclusive rights in key sectors and level the playing field for all economic players.
The journey towards WTO membership has been a priority for Uzbekistan, with key milestones achieved in recent months. Bilateral negotiations with over 30 countries have advanced, and alignment with WTO norms through various reforms and adjustments has been a focus.
President Mirziyoyev’s commitment to enhancing Uzbekistan’s trade prospects and integrating it into the global market has garnered support, including a visit from WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who endorsed Uzbekistan’s accession to the organization.
With a clear vision for economic growth and competitiveness, Uzbekistan is on track to achieve its WTO membership goal by 2026, signaling a new era of opportunities and partnerships on the international trade front.
