Prominent Azerbaijani Opposition Leader Killed in France
Israel Widens Attacks on Iran-Backed Groups, Strikes Hodeida and Lebanon
Israel’s military has expanded its airstrikes on Iran-backed militant groups, targeting the Yemeni port city of Hodeida held by Huthi rebels, as well as Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut and other areas of Lebanon. These aggressive actions have raised concerns among global leaders about the possibility of an all-out war in the Middle East.
In a recent large-scale air operation, Israel’s military conducted strikes on military targets of the Huthi terrorist regime in Yemen, including a power plant and seaport used for importing oil and alleged Iranian weapons. This escalation comes amidst the ongoing civil war in Yemen, with Huthi rebels supported by Iran, causing a humanitarian crisis in the country.
The importance of Hodeida’s deep-water port for humanitarian aid delivery has been disrupted by the conflict, affecting millions of Yemeni civilians. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized that Israel would strike its adversaries regardless of the distance involved.
The Huthi rebels, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Hamas in Gaza are seen as Iranian proxies in the region. Tensions have been rising, with the Huthis targeting ships in the Persian Gulf and launching missiles toward Israel, claiming to support Hamas fighters in Gaza.
Amid mounting calls for de-escalation from the United Nations and major powers, including the United States, France, and others, the situation remains tense. The Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, has called for a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized the need to avoid an all-out war in the Middle East and expressed plans to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The United States reiterated its unwavering support for Israel’s security but emphasized the importance of a diplomatic approach to protect civilians.
Iran has vowed to respond to the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut and has sought an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has increased its strikes on Israel, with hundreds of missiles fired daily.
The international community, including permanent members of the UN Security Council, has urged de-escalation and expressed grave concern over the growing conflict. Pope Francis also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the region.
As tensions continue to rise, there are fears of a wider conflict involving Israel, Iran, and the United States. The situation remains fluid, with the need for urgent diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and protect civilian lives.
