Provinces Under Scrutiny: Which Areas are at Risk? – Latest Video News

Recently, the Savrun Fault in Kahramanmaraş has come under close scrutiny following the earthquakes that occurred on February 6. Soil is being excavated, and trenches are being opened as researchers investigate the potential for this fault to produce earthquakes.

Alican Kop, a faculty member at Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University, and his team are conducting studies on the Savrun Fault, which runs through the Göksun and Andırın districts of Kahramanmaraş. By analyzing data on previous seismic activity along the fault, they hope to understand when earthquakes occur and at what intervals.

In a statement, Alican Kop emphasized the importance of studying the Savrun Fault, stating, “In the February 6 Elbistan earthquake, the Çardak Fault ruptured up to Göksun, and the Savrun Fault is its continuation. Therefore, it is crucial to uncover the seismic parameters of the Savrun Fault.”

Experts have also raised concerns about a second earthquake source in Kahramanmaraş, warning that the fault passing through the city could potentially generate a magnitude 6.5 earthquake. They stressed the need for immediate precautions to be taken in buildings that have been damaged.

“The earth’s crust will shift from north to south, causing displacement. This movement could lead to severe damage or destruction of structures along the fault line. It is alarming that we have an earthquake source passing through the city that has not yet produced a significant earthquake,” said one expert.

Alican Kop further urged authorities to address the situation of moderately and severely damaged buildings promptly, as the region may experience more earthquakes of varying magnitudes in the future. The safety of residents and buildings must be a top priority to mitigate potential risks.
