The world’s last remaining truly wild horse species, the rare Przewalski’s horses, have found a new home at the San Francisco Zoo and Gardens. Once exclusive to the Mongolian steppes of the Gobi Desert, these magnificent animals were on the verge of extinction until their arrival at the zoo.
Forty years ago, Przewalski’s horses were declared extinct in the wild. However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of accredited zoos and conservationists, coordinated captive breeding programs have managed to bring their population to a staggering 2,000. Additionally, some wild herds have thrived in reintroduction sites and natural preserves.
The San Diego Zoo has played a vital role in supporting the breeding program, providing a sanctuary for over 200 horses. Nancy Chan, spokesperson for the San Francisco Zoo, revealed that the entire Przewalski’s horse population can be traced back to just 12 founder animals in the breeding programs. She emphasized that all 2,000 of these horses are descendants of the original group.
Exciting news awaits visitors to the San Francisco Zoo as plans are underway to create a new Asian Conservation Zone. This area will showcase the unique flora and landscape features of Asia. While the zoo currently houses Asian animals like Komodo dragons, monkeys, and snow leopards, the upcoming renovation will bring all the animals from Asia together.
