Public Ownership of Budapest’s Pest Lower Embankments Begins on March 15th

The Pest lower embankment running near the River Danube will be given back to pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, families going for a walk, etc. until autumn. Cars will not be able to enter the area at the weekends.

According to telex.hu, the lower embankments will belong to pedestrians each weekend and on national holidays between 15 March and 23 October. Only cars and trucks will not be able to enter the area, but people with micro-mobility devices, bicycles and pedestrians will be able to use it. The lower embankment’s opening will apply on a long section between the Margarate Bridge and Irányi Street.

The measure has become a tradition since 2020. The lower embankment has been used by pedestrians for 102 weekends. The Budapest Mayor’s Office said the measure is based on considerable and colourful civilian and professional support.

The opening is part of an agreement signed in autumn 2022 and includes 16 associations. The agreement aims to develop the Budapest embankments through cooperation with all interested sides. Last year, Budapest organised 250 programs in the framework of the Rakpart’23 event with the support of the capital, the Valyo – Város és folyó Egyesület (City and River Association) and other NGOs.

The Pest side lower embankment is one of Budapest’s most beautiful public spaces with a breathtaking view of the Buda Castle District, the Gellért Hill, the Roses Hill or the Buda side palaces. The first weekend the aforementioned section will be open to the public on the Pest side will be between 15 and 17 March.

According to budapest.hu, the lower embankments of Budapest have become the meeting point of tens of thousands of people. Furthermore, it has become a vivid public space where locals (or tourists) can enjoy a barbecue while kids can cycle or play safely.
