Turkey Announces Increase in Public Workers’ Salary

Thousands of public workers in Turkey can now breathe a sigh of relief as the much-awaited increase in their salary has been announced. The base wage of these workers was initially 15 thousand liras. However, they will now receive a 45 percent increase for the first six months. As a result, the gross salary of the workers has increased to 21 thousand 750 liras.

Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University Lecturer Tarkan Zengin stated that the base salaries of public workers have increased by 107 percent. He added that around 362 thousand of 700 thousand public workers were receiving a base wage and that the wage of the lowest public worker has increased to around 18 thousand liras.

For the second six months, public workers will receive a 15 percent increase plus inflation difference, while 10 percent plus inflation difference will be paid for the third and fourth six months. The increase in salaries also covers social rights and additional payments.

The protocol agreed upon by the Turkish government also includes increasing the wages of martyrs’ relatives, veterans, and victims of terrorism by 10 percent. Furthermore, a 70 percent slice was introduced for overtime work.

In addition to the above facts, the wages of night workers will be paid with an increase of 8 percent. The framework protocol also includes articles that concern all public employees, with one clause stating that public institutions will work on those who were excluded from the scope of the subcontracted workers recruited by Decree No. 696.
