Ukraine Strikes Second Bridge in Russia’s Kursk Region, Escalating Conflict
The commander of Ukraine’s air force, Mykola Oleschuk, announced on Telegram that a second bridge in Russia’s Kursk region has been struck as part of Kyiv’s efforts to weaken Russia’s combat operations in the area. This strike comes nearly two weeks into Ukraine’s surprise counteroffensive into the region, causing significant disruptions in the dynamics of the ongoing conflict.
According to Oleschuk, the air force is continuing to target enemy infrastructure with precise air strikes, effectively hampering Russia’s logistical capabilities and impacting the course of hostilities. Moscow has not yet responded to the latest strike, which has led to the displacement of 120,000 people in the region.
The destruction of the first bridge over the Seym River near the village of Zvannoye in Kursk, previously targeted by Ukrainian forces, has already disrupted civilian evacuation efforts in the Glushkov district, according to Russian security officials. Analysts believe that targeting bridges over the Seym is crucial for Ukraine to secure its offensive in Kursk and limit Moscow’s ability to supply troops south of the river.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy praised the ongoing operation in Kursk, noting that it continues to inflict losses on the Russian Army and their infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of destroying Russian potential and conducting effective counterattacks to create a buffer zone in the region.
As the conflict escalates, reports of casualties and damage on both sides continue to emerge. Russian forces intercepted several Ukrainian drones over Belgorod, Kursk, and Rostov, while Ukraine reported downing eight drones and five missiles in various regions. Additionally, Russian ballistic missiles targeted Kyiv, destroying homes and causing damage, but fortunately, no casualties were reported.
With the conflict intensifying, the situation remains tense in the region, prompting calls for civilian evacuation in affected areas. As both sides engage in military maneuvers, the impact on civilians and infrastructure continues to escalate, raising concerns about the ongoing violence and the humanitarian crisis in the region.
