Rainy Day at Gallipoli: A History Buff’s Dream

The historical Gallipoli Peninsula welcomes thousands of visitors under the downpour

Visitors to the historical peninsula of Gallipoli, where significant battles of the Gallipoli Campaign took place during World War I, gather to pay their respects and honor the memories of those who fought and sacrificed their lives in the name of their country.

Among the key sites that visitors explore are the Şahindere Martyrdom, known for its intense hand-to-hand combat, the 57th Infantry Regiment Martyrdom, Conkbayırı, the Martyrs’ Monument, the house in Bigalı village where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk made his pre-war operational plans, and the monuments of Sergeant Yahya and Corporal Seyit.

Despite the pouring rain, visitors from all over Anatolia, including student groups and families, participate in tours organized by municipalities and local authorities. They offer prayers at the graves of their ancestors and express gratitude while visiting these historic landmarks.

One visitor, Sinan Kurt from Antalya, shared that he brought his children to the region to introduce them to their heritage and history. “Even though it’s raining, we got off the bus to show our children where their grandfathers fought bravely. The rain is a sign of God’s wisdom, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be here,” Kurt noted.

Another visitor, 10-year-old Yiğit Hakan Çelik from Kırklareli, expressed his emotions about visiting the region. “Although I got wet in the rain, it was a small sacrifice compared to what our martyrs endured. Walking around here, I feel a deep connection to our history and the sacrifices made for our future,” Çelik shared.

Field guide Erol Öken highlighted the significant interest shown by visitors in the region despite the weather conditions. “Visitors come here to honor the past and pay their respects to the martyrs. It’s heartwarming to see people from all over Anatolia come together to remember our shared history,” Öken remarked.

As visitors brave the rain to explore these historic sites, they stand in solidarity to commemorate the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought in the Gallipoli Campaign, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations to remember and respect.
