Reaching 200 Thousand Barrels per Day: Oil Roadmap

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar has recently announced important news regarding Turkey’s oil production during the Ramadan Feast. Turkey has broken a record in oil production, with 33 wells exceeding 40 thousand barrels for the first time in history. The initial target was to reach 100 thousand barrels per day by the end of the year, which seemed like a daunting task. However, with the average production per well in Turkish Petroleum’s fields exceeding 1200 barrels, the goal is within reach.

In order to reach the target of 100 thousand barrels per day, the total number of wells needs to increase to 95. Ministry officials have already planned to commission 4 more wells in the near future to ramp up production. The roadmap shows that production is expected to reach 50 thousand barrels in the first half of the year, with efforts to put approximately 10 more towers into operation by summer. Drilling is currently ongoing in more than 15 rigs to meet the production goals.

Minister Bayraktar highlighted that the oil production in Şırnak has turned the city into the oil capital of Turkey. The increase in production also means an increase in employment opportunities in the region. Authorities aim to turn Şırnak into a training center for workers, engineers, and technical personnel needed in the industry. Additionally, plans are underway to open a Petroleum Engineering Department and other programs at Şırnak University to support the growing industry.

The main goal is to increase Turkey’s total oil production to 200 thousand barrels per day, with new wells planned to open in Hakkari and Van. This would cover 20 percent of Turkey’s daily oil needs and contribute significantly to the country’s economy. TPAO is targeting a record number of drillings this year, focusing on areas like Şırnak, Siirt, Diyarbakır, Hakkari, and Van for oil exploration.

Apart from oil, Şırnak also hosts important mineral deposits like zinc, coal, chrome, and more. Plans are also in place to develop renewable energy production in the region with geothermal, solar, and wind power plants. Minister Bayraktar emphasized the importance of renewable energy for achieving full energy independence, with a goal to increase the share of renewable energy in production to 55 percent by 2035.

Overall, Turkey’s oil and energy sector is experiencing significant growth, with Şırnak playing a crucial role in the country’s production and economic development. The efforts to increase oil production and develop renewable energy sources showcase Turkey’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and reducing dependence on imports.
