Record-breaking Heatwave Hits Hungary, Blazing Summer Temperatures Reported

The summer of 2024 in Hungary has been one for the record books, with two out of the three hottest months in the last 123 years occurring this year. The temperatures have been soaring, with the overall summer being nearly 3 degrees hotter than the average of the previous three decades.

June was already warmer than usual, but the heat only intensified in July and August. This summer witnessed the longest and most intense heatwave on record, breaking the seasonal temperature record for the second time in three years.

Daily data revealed that August’s average temperature was on par with July’s, which was just shy of becoming the hottest month in 123 years. The upward trend in temperatures is evident, with the average summer temperature in 2024 being 2.6 degrees higher than the average between 1991 and 2020.

Records continue to be broken one after the other, with every season in the past year surpassing previous warmth records. The overall average temperature for the previous 12 months was 13.5 degrees Celsius, nearly 3 degrees above the average for the past 30 years.

Warnings about the heat have been prevalent, with 28 days of warnings issued in the summer and more in early September. The trend of high temperatures is expected to continue as September kicks off with a heatwave, with average daily temperatures expected to stay above 25 degrees Celsius for the next few days.

With temperatures on the rise and records being shattered, it is clear that Hungary is experiencing a significant shift in its climate patterns. As we brace for what the future holds, it is essential to stay informed and prepared for these unprecedented weather events.
