Commemorating the Marmara Earthquake in Sakarya and Yalova
An event organized by the Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality in Democracy Square brought together participants to remember the tragic events of the Marmara Earthquake. The program included recitations of the Quran, hymns, and eulogies, followed by a display of the events surrounding the devastating earthquake. Turkish Red Crescent provided refreshments to the attendees, highlighting the importance of solidarity and remembrance.
During the program, Sakarya Governor Yaşar Karadeniz addressed the audience, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to prevent future disasters. He commended the efforts of local governments and AFAD in implementing risk reduction action plans across the country. Governor Karadeniz also praised the discipline and dedication shown in Sakarya’s horizontal construction efforts, ensuring the city’s resilience against earthquakes.
AK Party Deputy Chairman Ali İhsan Yavuz echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of earthquake preparedness and mitigation. He acknowledged the progress made in Sakarya but called for continued efforts to safeguard against future disasters. Likewise, AK Party Sakarya Deputy Çiğdem Erdoğan emphasized the significance of urban transformation projects in creating safer environments for residents.
Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Alemdar reiterated the commitment to enhancing earthquake preparedness in the region. He noted the ongoing efforts to construct resilient buildings and transform vulnerable structures, ensuring the safety and well-being of the local population. The program also featured a prayer for the earthquake victims and a visit to search and rescue activity stands.
In Yalova, Governor Hülya Kaya led a “silent walk” to the Earthquake Monument, honoring the lives lost in the disaster. Governor Kaya emphasized the importance of collective action in reducing earthquake risks and promoting urban transformation. Participants laid carnations at the monument, symbolizing their commitment to building safer communities.
As the anniversary of the Marmara Earthquake serves as a stark reminder of past tragedies, both Sakarya and Yalova continue to prioritize disaster preparedness and resilience. By coming together, local authorities, organizations, and residents aim to create a safer future and prevent the recurrence of such devastating events.
