Edirne, a city rich in history and culture, is home to many treasures from the Ottoman era. Among these historical gems are the Kıyık Bastion and the monument dedicated to Mehmet Şükrü Pasha.
The Kıyık Bastion, dating back to the late 19th century, was constructed between 1867 and 1871 to defend the city during the Ottoman-Russian and Balkan Wars. This bastion, one of the 35 bastions in the city, played a crucial role in protecting Edirne.
Covering an area of 34 thousand square meters, the Kıyık Bastion includes the Şükrü Pasha Monument area, a guardhouse, headquarters, artillery rooms, and green spaces. This historical site was transferred to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism by the Ministry of National Defense for preservation and promotion.
Mehmet Şükrü Pasha, a military figure born in Erzurum in 1857, served in various roles within the Ottoman military. Despite facing challenges and setbacks in his career, Şükrü Pasha proved his valor during the Balkan Wars when he defended Edirne against a siege that lasted 5 months and 5 days.
In honor of his courageous actions, Şükrü Pasha’s body was brought to Edirne and laid to rest in a mausoleum on the Kıyık Bastion. The monument dedicated to him was inaugurated on July 27, 1998, commemorating his legacy and bravery.
