Devil’s Castle in Ardahan to Undergo Restoration
The historic Devil’s Castle, believed to have been built during the Urartian period, is set to undergo restoration in Ardahan, Turkey. With its unique views and picturesque surroundings, the castle attracts visitors year-round, including tourists, mountain climbers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
According to Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Uğur Dede, Devil’s Castle has significant potential for tourism and economic development. Efforts have been made to transfer the castle from the village’s jurisdiction to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, paving the way for restoration projects to be included in the investment program.
After the restoration is completed, Devil’s Castle will be connected to Karaçay Canyon, offering a wide range of recreational activities such as mountaineering, hiking, and hydrotherapy. The region currently welcomes around 60,000 tourists annually, with daily visits ranging from 35 to 40 people, even during the winter months.
Ardahan University’s Faculty of Humanities and Letters lecturer, Suat Vural, highlighted the historical significance of Devil’s Castle, noting its resemblance to Urartian castles in terms of location and architecture. Over the centuries, the castle has witnessed numerous invasions and changes in rulership, making it a vital landmark in the region’s history.
As restoration efforts continue and plans for the castle’s future development take shape, Devil’s Castle remains a symbol of cultural heritage and a beacon for tourists seeking to explore Turkey’s rich history and natural beauty.
