Restoring the Iconic Hotel Gellért to Its Former Grandeur

Renovation of Historic Hotel Gellért in Budapest Begins

The iconic Hotel Gellért complex in Budapest has embarked on a journey of renovation to preserve its historic heritage and restore it to its former glory. The internationally acclaimed Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, known for its upscale hotels, will be responsible for operating the hotel, as reported by World Economy.

Plans for the renovation include creating 134 guest rooms, including 34 suites, and reconstructing three key interior spaces – the lobby, the Danube Room, and the Tapestry Room (Gobelin Room) – in their original splendor, based on archival museum photographs and plans.

The interiors have been designed by the renowned London design studio Alexander Waterworth Interiors, adding a touch of sophistication to the historical building.

Aside from the complete refurbishment, the project aims to introduce new features that will enhance the range and quality of services, revitalizing the building to its former “golden age.”

Zoltán Kecskeméthy, Managing Director of BDPST Real Estate Development, the project developer, emphasized the importance of giving back to the city by respecting the historic heritage while incorporating modern and sustainable solutions.

The initial phase of the renovation will involve non-structural demolition and foundation reinforcement works carried out by the DVM Group, selected for their commitment to preserving the building’s façade and the city skyline.

Materials from the hotel that were depreciated during the renovation process were either sold to museums or donated to various institutions, ensuring a sustainable approach to the project.

The Hotel Gellért, an iconic Art Nouveau establishment dating back to 1918, is located on the Danube’s west bank and is connected to the famous Gellért Thermal Bath. While the hotel is closed for renovations until 2027, the baths continue to operate independently, owned and managed by the City of Budapest.

The grand reopening of the Hotel Gellért in 2027 is eagerly anticipated, promising a blend of timeless elegance with modern amenities, reaffirming its status as a renowned entity in the heart of Budapest.
