Reviving Transylvanian Traditions: The Highlights of Design Week

Transylvanian Design Week Exhibition Explores “The New Middle Ages”
This year’s Transylvanian Design Week (TDW) exhibition, with the theme of “The New Middle Ages,” is currently on display at the Szekler Museum of Ciuc in Ciuc (Csíkszereda), Romania. The exhibition, which runs from March 20 to April 20, showcases the role and impact of visual culture today, featuring works by over 50 Transylvanian and international designers. TDW aims to highlight and connect designers from Transylvania.
The exhibitors are presenting their work in four categories: fashion design, graphic design, product design, and motion design. Aranka Karda-Markaly, the director of the Szekler Museum of Ciuc, stated that this year’s exhibition creates a unique dialogue between the material world of the past and the present by displaying the museum’s exhibits alongside the works of the designers.
Curator Gyárfás Oláh explained that the theme of “The New Middle Ages” was inspired by today’s political situation and aims to explore how designers are influenced by current global events. The exhibition opens with a guided tour on March 20, followed by Design Talks featuring professional presentations and discussions for designers on March 21. Registration is required for both events.
On March 22, a Design Fair will take place, and on April 1, “Brands in Motion” will showcase commercials and applied animation works by Transylvanian brands. The event not only presents cultural heritage in a new way but also demonstrates that design and tradition can coexist and evolve together.
This year’s TDW exhibition is not only a platform for showcasing creativity but also a reflection of the evolving relationship between design, tradition, and contemporary global challenges.Visit the Transylvanian Design Week Facebook page for more information on the upcoming events.
