Rise in Freight Trains from Jiangsu to Central Asia
In January 2025, there was a significant increase in freight train departures from Jiangsu Province in Eastern China to Central Asia. According to the Transportation Department of the province, a total of 96 freight trains departed during this period, marking a 38.7% increase compared to the same period last year.
This surge in freight train traffic is part of a larger trend of expanding international cargo transportation through China, particularly along the China-Europe route. In total, Jiangsu Province handled 195 freight trains in January, carrying 16,010 standard containers (twenty-foot equivalent units, TEUs).
The rise in the number of trains and containers signifies the growing interest in Central Asian and European markets among Chinese manufacturers and logistics companies. Local businesses are actively developing their routes and providing services to enterprises that export various goods such as clothing, toys, and household appliances. It is expected that the volume of cargo shipped will continue to increase in the future, with efforts being made to reduce transportation costs for international freight trains arriving in the province.
This development highlights the importance of China’s role in international trade and its efforts to strengthen connectivity with neighboring regions.
