Rising Kazakh Animation: Passionate Creators Triumph Over Financial Challenges

Kazakhstan’s golden age in animation lies ahead, despite challenges
The animation industry in Kazakhstan is on the rise, with Tasqyn Animation Studio leading the way. Despite facing challenges such as inadequate funding and commercial unfeasibility, the founders of the studio remain optimistic about the future of animated movies in Kazakhstan.
Founded in 2022, Tasqyn studio has already gained international recognition for its innovative and idea-driven approach to animation. Last year, their animated noir film “Seriktes” (Partner) won the Best Short Film award at the Animated Expressions Expo in France and Best Animated Film at the Santa Cruz International Film Festival in Argentina.
However, the founders acknowledge the struggles faced by the animation industry in Kazakhstan. Director Madina Sutbayeva highlighted the costly and labor-intensive nature of creating cartoons, with many studios relying on crowdfunding or government subsidies to stay afloat. The studio has managed to attract investment from large businesses as part of their ESG strategy.
Producer Aigerim Abdramanova pointed out the challenges faced by young aspiring artists in turning their creative talents into rewarding careers, leading to a brain drain in the industry. Despite the demand for Kazakh-language content, local channels often prioritize foreign cartoons over locally produced projects.
The founders of Tasqyn studio believe that Kazakhstan has the potential to carve out its niche in the global animation market by drawing on the country’s rich history and culture. With a new generation of talented students graduating from animation programs, the studio dreams of becoming the Kazakh alternative to foreign animation giants like Dream Works or Ghibli Studio.
As the industry continues to evolve, the founders urge aspiring animators to stay committed to their craft and continue creating, even in the face of financial challenges. The future of Kazakh animation looks promising, with a growing interest in domestic content and the potential for global recognition.
In conclusion, Kazakhstan’s animation industry may have its challenges, but with the enthusiasm and innovation of studios like Tasqyn, the country is well-positioned to shine on the international stage.
