Nicosia Turkish Municipality Hosts 6th “SOCK IT UP!” Event for Down Syndrome Awareness

The Nicosia Turkish Municipality (LTB) commemorated Down Syndrome Awareness Day on March 21 by organizing the 6th edition of the “SOCK IT UP!” event in Nicosia.

Participants donned colorful socks and carried balloons to raise awareness as they marched from Kuğulu Park to Lefkeliler Square within the city walls. Individuals with Down syndrome, children, families, representatives from special education centers, and various non-governmental organizations all took part in the event, which featured stage performances to showcase their talent and abilities.

LTB President Mehmet Harmancı spoke to the press at Kuğulu Park in Cyprus, emphasizing that having an extra chromosome is not a disability but rather a source of richness. He highlighted the importance of celebrating the uniqueness of individuals with Down syndrome.

Harmancı announced plans to open a new establishment called the “New World +1 Cafe” in Nicosia, where young people with Down syndrome can work and gain valuable experience. The cafe, set to launch later this month, will provide vocational training in partnership with the Ministries of National Education and Tourism.

Harmancı expressed gratitude for the support from local businesses eager to collaborate and help create inclusive work environments. “Today, we are not only raising awareness but also celebrating the progress we have made in the past 6 years,” he remarked.

The event served as a reminder of the importance of embracing diversity and promoting social inclusion for individuals with Down syndrome. The “SOCK IT UP!” initiative continues to make strides in breaking down barriers and fostering a more inclusive society.
