“Round Table Discussion Highlights Synergy of Green Economy and Digital Transformation”
Turkmenistan Discusses “Green” Economy and Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development
On May 11, 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan held a round table discussion on the promotion of a “green” economy and digital transformation for sustainable development in the country. Attendees included heads and representatives from relevant ministries and departments in Turkmenistan, as well as specialized UN agencies. Discussions centered on the results of Turkmenistan’s participation in the 70th session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and the Ministerial Meeting of the UN Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) held in Geneva in April of this year.
Participants at the round table exchanged views on topical issues of digital and green transformation for sustainable development. Attendees acknowledged that modern technologies open up new opportunities for economic development, public service management, and have great potential for improving the management of natural resources. Emphasis was placed on the importance of implementing national programs and international obligations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in relation to climate change.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, M.Byashimova, noted in her speech that the development of a “green” economy, the use of new environmentally friendly technologies, and innovative solutions in the environmental field is a priority of the country’s state policy. Turkmenistan is keen to work towards reducing greenhouse gases, particularly methane, and to expand international partnership in the field of digitalization and green technologies.
In discussions, it was noted that the smart city of Arkadag had implemented the concept of a “smart city” and zero harm to the environment at all stages, from the production of building materials to the operation of facilities. Attendees expressed strong support for Turkmenistan’s active participation in multilateral cooperation, particularly in promoting effective digital and “green” solutions.
Overall, the round table confirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to a sustainable future, sustainable energy, low-carbon solutions, and reducing pressure on the environment. Turkmenistan is eager to share and expand its expertise and impact internationally.
