Russia criticizes Israel and Western countries for disregarding majority opinion at the UN

UN Security Council Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza
The United Nations Security Council recently held an emergency meeting to discuss the escalating situation in the Middle East. During the meeting, Russia’s Permanent Representative, Nebenzia, criticized Israel and western countries for their failure to support a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Nebenzia expressed his disappointment with Israel, stating, “Sadly, this shows Israel blatantly ignoring the views of the overwhelming majority of UN members, including many Western countries, that the violence must end.” He also questioned the United States’ stance on the ceasefire, asking if it meant that the US supports mass retaliation against Gaza.
Furthermore, Nebenzia highlighted the double standards displayed by western countries. He pointed out that these nations have shown compassion for civilians in Ukraine but failed to extend the same empathy to Palestinians in Gaza. He urged other western countries to answer for their abstention from the ceasefire call and emphasized the need for consistency in their approach to protecting civilian lives.
US Permanent Representative to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, also expressed concern for the escalating violence against Palestinian civilians. She mourned the deaths of UN personnel and stressed the importance of protecting innocent civilians, humanitarian aid workers, and journalists. Thomas-Greenfield called on Israel to take every precaution to prevent harm to civilians and appealed for the prevention of further violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.
Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Riyad Mansur, drew attention to the alarming number of Palestinian children killed during Israeli attacks. He criticized the Security Council for its inaction and asked, “How long will it take for you to understand that thousands of children are being killed before your eyes?” Mansur pleaded for an end to the darkness and death that the Palestinian people are enduring.
Mansur highlighted the precarious situation in Gaza, where 2.3 million Palestinians face the threat of death every day and every night. He called on the international community to see Palestinians as human beings and acknowledged the reality that Israel is attempting to eliminate the population in Gaza and force Palestinians into Egypt’s Sinai desert.
In light of these developments, the UN Security Council has urged an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to prevent further loss of life and suffering. The global community is hopeful that this urgent call will bring an end to the violence and pave the way for a lasting peace in the region.
