Kosovo’s Self-Determination Movement Leads in Parliamentary Elections
Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s ruling Self-Determination Movement (LVV) appears to be on track to win the most votes in Kosovo’s parliamentary elections, although falling short of a majority. This outcome could lead to political instability in a crucial time for the country.
According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), with 93 percent of the votes counted, LVV has secured 41 percent of the vote, in line with pre-election polls indicating a result below 50 percent. Following LVV are the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) with 22 percent, the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) with 18 percent, and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) and partner NISMA with 7.6 percent. The Serbian List obtained 4 percent of the vote, after a legal battle that allowed their participation in the elections.
With a voter turnout of 41 percent, the results could potentially pave the way for the opposition to form a government in the Balkan nation, impacting its relationship with the EU and the United States, Kosovo’s main sponsors. The political landscape remains uncertain, with foreign policy experts warning of consequences if a stable government is not formed promptly.
Despite the overall outcome being unclear, Albin Kurti declared victory for his party, the LVV, and its coalition partners, stating that the elections were free, democratic, and fair. However, forming a government may prove challenging given the party’s decreased support compared to previous elections.
The outcome of the elections could influence Kosovo’s relations with the EU and the United States, as well as shape its handling of peace talks with Serbia. Both Kurti and his opponents have expressed the importance of maintaining strong ties with the West while addressing internal political challenges.
