Russia’s Critique of US Middle East Policy
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mariya Zaharova recently addressed various current issues at a weekly press conference held in Moscow. One of the key topics discussed was US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to the Middle East, particularly Israel, amidst the crisis in the Gaza Strip.
Zaharova emphasized the need for a long-term ceasefire and urgent humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. She stressed the importance of establishing a clear political resolution to the Middle East problem in order to achieve permanent peace in the region. Zakharova criticized the US for its actions in the Middle East, accusing them of undermining international legal foundations for resolving the Palestine problem.
The spokesperson called for a comprehensive political dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis based on UN resolutions and international legal frameworks. She advocated for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, to ensure peace and security in the region.
Zaharova also highlighted solidarity demonstrations in the US in support of Palestine, condemning the harsh interventions by US security forces against peaceful protesters. She urged the US government to respect human rights and called on international organizations to address these issues.
In response to British Foreign Secretary David Cameron’s statement regarding Ukraine’s right to attack Russian targets with British weapons, Zaharova criticized the admission of Western involvement in a war against Russia through Ukraine. She expressed openness to constructive proposals for resolving the Ukraine crisis but rejected the language of threats and blackmail.
Overall, Zaharova’s remarks shed light on the complex geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, calling for diplomatic solutions based on international law and respect for human rights.
