Scientific Panel Monitoring Pollution in Izmir Bay – Latest News from Turkey

Efforts Continue to Identify and Prevent Pollution Source in Izmir Bay

Following the incident of dead fish washing up on Turan Beach in the Bayraklı district on August 20, efforts are ongoing to identify and prevent the pollution source that caused a bad smell in the area.

Recent days have shown a significant decrease in fish deaths in the gulf, attributed to the decrease in air temperatures, increased water circulation due to the effect of the wind, and ongoing cleaning works. However, the bad odor problem persists at certain points of Karşıyaka and Bayraklı beaches.

Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, revealed alarming information regarding the pollution levels in the sea. The amount of ammonia in wastewater sources is currently 50 times higher than the acceptable limit, indicating a mix of domestic and industrial waste entering the water without proper treatment.

Kurum emphasized that the total harmful substances in the inner gulf exceeded the limit value by twice and highlighted the lifeless conditions in some parts of the gulf, leading to the death of fish due to oxygen deprivation.

Addressing those responsible for the deteriorating state of the sea, Kurum criticized previous authorities who neglected to take necessary actions despite promising to improve conditions during election campaigns. He assured that the ministry will continue to monitor and supervise those accountable for the situation in Izmir.

In an effort to address the pollution issue and safeguard the future of the gulf, a scientific board has been established to provide guidance on necessary actions and appointments. Authorities are determined to work towards restoring the health and vitality of Izmir Bay while holding accountable those responsible for its current state.
