Seashells Found in Risky Building’s Concrete During Demolition in Büyükçekmece
During the urban transformation process in Büyükçekmece, a shocking discovery was made during the demolition of a 5-storey building at risk of earthquakes. Seashells were found in the concrete of the building, raising concerns about the quality of the construction.
Mayor Hasan Akgün expressed his worries about the building’s structural integrity, stating that the columns and beams were very thin. He noted that if a 5.5 magnitude earthquake were to occur, the building would be at risk of collapsing.
The mayor emphasized the importance of urban transformation efforts in Istanbul, particularly in the Tepecik region. He highlighted the need for proper construction techniques and adherence to technical rules to ensure the safety of buildings in the area.
Upon further inspection, it was revealed that the building had been constructed using sea sand in the concrete and that the iron reinforcements were not up to standard. Akgün pointed out the deficiencies in the construction materials and called for stricter enforcement of building regulations to prevent future disasters.
