Inspections Intensify to Combat Illegal Mussel Trade in the Sea of Marmara
Efforts to curb the illegal mussel trade in the Sea of Marmara are underway as inspections continue vigorously. Led by the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, Fisheries and Fisheries Branch, the inspections involve cooperation between various authorities, including the Istanbul Coast Guard Marmara and Straits Regional Command, Istanbul Provincial Police Department Sea Port Branch Office, and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Police Department.
In a surprising revelation, it was found that more than 70 tons of black hairy mussels were smuggled out of the Marmara Sea over a span of six months. As a result of the inspections, these illegally obtained mussels have been confiscated. Furthermore, 21 boats involved in the smuggling operations have been seized, and a fine of one million lira has been imposed.
Illegal harvesting of black hairy mussels has become a growing concern in the region. These mussels, known for their unique taste and nutritional value, are highly sought after, leading to an increase in illegal hunting practices.
