“Sergeant Ölmez Honored as a Martyr Specialist in Final Journey”
The funeral of Gendarmerie Specialist Sergeant Serkan Ölmez took place in his hometown of Mersin, Turkey. Ölmez was one of four soldiers who were martyred during an operation against PKK terrorists in Şırnak Bestler Dereler region. His funeral was held at night and attended by a large community of citizens, military and civil officials, including Deputy Minister of Interior Mehmet Ersoy and Mersin Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan.
The next morning, Ölmez’s funeral procession was taken from the morgue of Tarsus State Hospital and a funeral ceremony was held in the Körmenlik District of Çamlıyayla district, at the request of his wife, Melek Ölmez. Their two sons, Taha Kağan and Ömer Erdem, along with other family members and military personnel, attended the ceremony.
During the emotional ceremony, Ölmez’s father, Mehmet Ölmez, was seen trying to be consoled by military personnel. After prayers were read, his relatives hugged the coffin and shed tears before Ölmez was laid to rest in the Körmenlik Mahallesi cemetery.
The loss of Specialist Sergeant Ölmez is a reminder of the sacrifice made by brave men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line to protect their country and citizens from terrorism. May he rest in peace and his family find comfort in knowing that his service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
