Solidarity Protest for Palestine Held at UCL in London

Students at University College London (UCL) took to the streets in protest of the university’s cooperation with Israel. The demonstration, held on Gower Street in front of the main campus, saw students and activists calling for an end to UCL’s ties with companies and banks that provide financial support to Israel. They also demanded that the university condemn Israel’s war crimes in Gaza.
In addition to urging UCL to sever its connections with Israel, activists called on the British government to halt arms sales to Israel and push for a ceasefire in the region. The protest drew attention from both supporters of Palestine and Israel, with demonstrations held on opposite sides of the street.
Police presence was heavy at the protest, with authorities taking measures to prevent clashes between the two groups. An activist named Itay, who organized the demonstration in support of Israel, was stopped by police as he tried to approach the area where pro-Palestine activists were gathered.
Meanwhile, three individuals supporting Palestine were detained by police, who also confiscated a banner with the word “freedom” and an image of a dove tearing down walls.
The protest at UCL follows a trend of university demonstrations in support of Palestine, with students setting up tents in the main campus garden. Similar protests have been taking place at universities in the USA, including Columbia University.
As tensions continue to escalate in the region, university administrations are taking steps to address the concerns of students. The sit-in protest at Goldsmiths College in support of Palestine recently ended after the school administration promised to review its ethical investment policy and provide scholarships to Palestinian students. The school also announced plans to name a conference hall after Al Jazeera’s Palestinian reporter Shirin Abu Akile, who was killed by Israel.
