South Korea accuses Netflix of “operational irregularities”

South Korea Investigates Netflix for Operational Irregularities

South Korea has launched an investigation against Netflix, alleging the popular streaming platform of “operational irregularities”. The South Korean Fair Trade Commission (SKFTC) has taken action by sending an inspector to Netflix’s headquarters in the capital city of Seoul to gather more information regarding the terms of use and conditions for cancelling subscriptions.

Netflix is under scrutiny for allegedly making it challenging for users to cancel their memberships early and failing to adequately inform users about the process of cancelling memberships within the billing period. This accusation has sparked concerns among consumers and authorities in South Korea.

With over 11 million subscribers, Netflix is considered the leading digital platform in South Korea based on data from the South Korean Communications Commission. In comparison, Wavve, another digital platform included in the investigation, holds the 4th position with approximately 4 million subscribers.

This is not the first time Netflix has faced scrutiny in South Korea. In February 2022, the streaming service was fined for “unfair subscription practices”, adding to the growing list of regulatory challenges it is currently facing.

As the investigation progresses, consumers and stakeholders will be closely monitoring the developments to ensure fair practices and transparency within the digital streaming industry.
