South Korea’s Incheon Airport Corporation to modernize and operate Urgench Airport

South Korea’s Incheon International Airport Corporation has been chosen to modernize and operate Urgench International Airport through a public-private partnership (PPP), as announced by Uzbekistan Airports.
The corporation, known for managing Incheon International Airport, South Korea’s largest aviation hub serving over 70 million passengers in 2024, will enter into a PPP agreement with Uzbekistan for a 19-year concession period.
Uzbekistan Airports stated that the open tender for Urgench Airport attracted significant interest from major international airport operators. The selected private partner is expected to revamp Urgench Airport, making it one of the most modern and passenger-friendly airports in the region, ultimately enhancing Khorezm’s appeal to international tourists.
The PPP project was initiated by the government and is being executed in collaboration with Uzbekistan Airports, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The tender, which was initially announced in August 2024, saw the application deadline extended to November.
As per the project’s terms, the private partner will be responsible for the construction and management of passenger and cargo terminals, along with ground handling services. Meanwhile, the public partner will oversee the construction and operation of airfield infrastructure, such as the runway and apron.
With this partnership, Urgench International Airport is poised for a transformation that will benefit both local and international travelers, further boosting Uzbekistan’s aviation sector.
