Spike in Meningitis Cases in Bishkek: 15 Cases Reported in First Quarter of 2024

At least 15 cases of meningococcal infection have been reported in the first quarter of 2024 in Bishkek, according to the Center for State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance of the capital.

Out of these cases, 12 patients are children under 14 years old. The center highlighted that globally, there are 500,000 cases of meningococcal infection annually, with 50,000 resulting in fatalities. Children, especially young ones, are particularly at risk.

Meningococcal infection is transmitted through airborne droplets, with an incubation period of 2-10 days. The disease can have serious consequences such as hearing loss, seizures, weakness in limbs, and issues with vision, speech, memory, and communication.

Symptoms of meningococcal infection include a sudden increase in body temperature, headaches, vomiting, and confusion. A rash on the limbs, buttocks, and body can indicate meningococcal sepsis.

It is crucial to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms of meningitis are present, as the outcome of the disease heavily relies on prompt treatment.

Preventing meningococcal infection is easier than treating it. The center advised on preventive measures such as boosting the immune system, maintaining a daily routine, practicing good personal hygiene, and avoiding contact with infected individuals.

Meningococcal infection is caused by the meningococcus bacteria and is characterized by cyclical increases in incidence every 13-15 years. The last surge in cases was in 2015, with a gradual rise in incidence since 2022, as reported by the Department of Disease Prevention, State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance.
