Study Visit to Latvia for Customs Service Representatives from Central Asia Supported by BOMCA

Border Management Programme in Central Asia (BOMCA 10) Facilitates Study Visit to Latvia for Central Asian Customs Representatives

From March 4th to 6th, the Border Management Programme in Central Asia (BOMCA 10), funded by the European Union, organized a study visit to Latvia for representatives of customs services from Central Asian countries.

The main objective of the visit was to provide participants with insights into the implementation of national customs information systems in Latvia and the digitalization process within the EU customs sphere. During their time in Latvia, the participants had the opportunity to observe the operation of Latvian customs information systems, centralized control of transit procedures, automated risk analysis, and the workings of a customs laboratory. Additionally, they visited the Riga Freeport and Riga Airport to learn about common transit procedures and simplified declaration procedures.

One of the highlights of the visit was the demonstration by specialists from the Latvian national postal operator “Latvijas Pasts” on the sorting and processing of postal items, data exchange with customs authorities, and automated declaration submission.

This study visit marks a significant step in supporting integration and improving customs administration in Central Asia. By gaining firsthand knowledge of best practices in customs procedures and digitalization from Latvia, the participants will be better equipped to facilitate legitimate trade flows across borders in their own countries.
