Synagogue Attack in Tunisia Leaves 3 Dead and 9 Injured

Tunisia’s Garibe Synagogue was attacked, with three people having lost their lives and nine others injured. The attack occurred on Djerba Island and the attacker responsible was a security guard. The Ministry of Interior had issued a statement regarding the attack and noted that 3 people, including 2 visitors and a police officer, lost their lives in the clash that erupted when the security forces intervened. The attacker was eventually killed in the clash, and 5 out of the 9 injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Despite the attack, the Garibe Synagogue continues to host thousands of Jews participating in pilgrimage activities. Djerba Island has a surface area of approximately 500 square kilometers and is renowned for its historical landmarks such as the Africa’s oldest synagogue, 366 mosques and masjids, and historical towers built underground by Muslims to guard against sea dangers. Even though the island has a population of 160,000, with Muslims constituting the majority, approximately 1,200 Tunisian Jews still call it home.
