Teachers’ Day in Turkey: Celebrating the Educators
Every year in November, Turkey celebrates Teachers’ Day, a meaningful day to honor and appreciate the hard work and dedication of educators. In 2023, Teachers’ Day will be celebrated on November 24, falling on a Friday.
The significance of November 24 as Teachers’ Day dates back to 1928 when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, accepted the position of “Head Teacher of National Schools”. The title was officially recognized and celebrated on November 24, 1928, and in 1981, the anniversary of Atatürk’s appointment as “head teacher” was declared as Teachers’ Day across the country.
The objectives of Teachers’ Day, the duties, powers, and responsibilities of the celebration committees, and the principles regarding the celebration day were determined by the “Teachers’ Day Celebration Regulation” published in the Official Gazette on February 26, 1981.
This day holds great significance in recognizing the role of educators in shaping the future of the nation. It is a time for students, parents, and communities to express their gratitude and respect to the teachers who play a crucial role in nurturing and guiding the youth.
