The Dirty Truth: A Long-Term Analysis of Air Pollution in Tashkent

The Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies and the Research Institute of Hydrometeorology conducted a study that highlighted the factors contributing to the poor air quality in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2023. The report, presented by climate expert Erkin Abdulahatov at an event organized by VatandoshTV Club, identified the blocking of wind corridors, dust from Kazakhstan, and the reliance on coal for heating as major contributors to the unhealthy and toxic air that residents endured for 65 days.

The study revealed that the wind corridors, which have historically aided in dispersing pollutants from the city, were being disrupted by excessive construction along canals and rivers. This disruption altered wind speed and direction, preventing pollutants buildup from being effectively dispersed. The prevailing wind directions have shifted eastward towards industrial cities and from Kazakhstan, leading to an increase in dust particles entering the city.

Over the years, toxic substances in the air have been on the rise, with measurements showing an increase in pollution levels in certain districts. Sources of pollution include natural sources like dust from Kazakhstan, construction and industrial activities, the automotive sector, and heating centers. The increase in vehicles on the road has also contributed significantly to air pollution, releasing harmful substances into the atmosphere.

To address these issues, targeted solutions were proposed for each district in Tashkent. Recommendations include expanding green spaces, implementing electric vehicle infrastructure, creating “green belts” around industrial zones, planting trees, developing ecological parks, setting up waste recycling centers, and monitoring air quality. The study also emphasized the importance of public and private sector collaboration, technological innovations, and cultivating aquatic plants to improve air, water, and waste quality.

By implementing these solutions and working towards a greener and more sustainable city, Tashkent can mitigate the factors contributing to poor air quality and create a healthier environment for its residents.
