The Importance of Mammography Screening

Mammography screening is vital for early breast cancer detection, says expert

According to Medical Oncology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Ahmet Özveren, mammography plays a crucial role in the early diagnosis of breast cancer and is “life-saving” for women. This statement comes following a comprehensive research study presented at the 2023 annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

The research, conducted by physicians in Sweden, aimed to determine the impact of missing even a single mammogram on breast cancer survival rates. The study included 36,079 breast cancer patients and found that women who attended all invited screening mammograms had a survival rate of over 80 percent, while those who did not participate in any screening had survival rates ranging from 59.1 percent to 77.6 percent. The research also revealed that women who attended all five screening mammograms had a 72 percent reduction in the risk of dying from breast cancer compared to those who did not attend any screening.

“These data reveal the vital importance of mammography screenings,” said Özveren, emphasizing the significance of regular screenings for women. The American Cancer Society recommends that women aged 45 to 54 should get a mammogram every year, and women aged 55 and over can switch to biennial mammography or continue annual mammography.

Özveren also warned that skipping a single scheduled mammogram can result in a more advanced diagnosis of breast cancer, significantly affecting the patient’s chance of survival. “According to this research, women should be regularly screened to reduce breast cancer deaths,” he emphasized.

In light of these findings, it is clear that mammography screenings are crucial for the early detection and survival of breast cancer. Women are urged to adhere to the recommended screening guidelines to prioritize their health and well-being.
