The Silent Resignation: How Poor Communication in the Workplace Leads to Quiet Quitting

In a recent study conducted by researchers at Corvinus University in Hungary, along with their international colleagues, the negative impact of inadequate organizational internal communication on employee loyalty and quiet quitting intentions in Hungarian enterprises has been revealed.

The study, led by Prof. Amitabh Anand of Excelia Business School and Corvinus University, in collaboration with experts from HSE University Moscow and the University of Alcala, aimed to measure the effects of negative internal communication within workplaces.

A 15-item scientific scale was developed to identify various levels of inadequate communication, from poorly conveyed organizational values to extreme frustration caused by misleading communication. The researchers found that inadequate internal communication significantly contributes to employees engaging in “quiet quitting,” where they only do the bare minimum required without going above and beyond due to dissatisfaction or disengagement.

The study highlights how poor communication can lead to disengagement, frustration, and unhappiness among employees, ultimately affecting organizational performance. Miscommunication, manipulative communication, and ineffective communication methods were found to erode trust, lead to conflict, and decrease overall employee morale and productivity.

Given Hungary’s cultural emphasis on clear and direct communication, this study holds particular relevance for organizations in the country. By using the new scientific tool developed in this study, companies can better understand and address communication challenges, ultimately improving employee engagement and productivity.

Effective internal communication is crucial for maintaining a positive work environment and boosting organizational performance. The study underscores the importance of addressing communication issues within organizations to create a conducive and productive workplace for employees.
