The Sokullu Mehmed Pasha Bridge: Ottoman Legacy on the Drina River in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has announced the technical acceptance of the restoration project for a historic bridge in the Balkans. The project, which was initiated in 2010 to repair damages on the bridge, was officially completed in 2019. This marks one of TİKA’s largest restoration projects in the region and has helped to preserve the common cultural heritage of the country for future generations.
The bridge, known for its splendor since it was first built, was honored by being included in the “World Cultural Heritage List” by UNESCO in 2007. This recognition further highlights the significance of the bridge as an important part of the region’s cultural heritage.
TIKA has emphasized the importance of preserving ancestral artifacts in the Balkans, where the Ottoman Empire ruled for over 550 years. The agency aims to protect and revive historical heritage, ensuring that it is transferred to future generations. Furthermore, TIKA seeks to support the culture of living together in the region, embracing its ethnic and religious richness.
The completion of the restoration project is a testament to TIKA’s commitment to preserving and promoting cultural heritage in the Balkans. It represents a significant step towards safeguarding the region’s history and ensuring that it continues to be celebrated and appreciated for years to come.
