Thousands Lose Limbs in Gaza Attacks

Gaza Faces Growing Crisis of Amputation Cases Due to Israeli Attacks

Director of the Information Unit of the Ministry of Health, Zahir al-Vahidi, revealed shocking statistics regarding the impact of Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip. According to Vahidi, a total of 4,500 amputation cases were recorded from October 7, 2023, to the end of 2024 as a result of these attacks.

Among the victims of these amputations, 800 were children and 540 were women. Vahidi warned that the number of cases is expected to rise as the Israeli attacks continue, putting a significant strain on Gaza’s already struggling healthcare system due to the ongoing blockade.

Urgent medical and humanitarian support is crucial to help the health sector in Gaza cope with this growing crisis, emphasized Vahidi. He called on the international community to intervene and put an end to Israel’s violations, ensuring the protection of civilians in Gaza.

In a separate statement by Lisa Doten from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in October 2024, Gaza was described as “the location of the largest group of child amputation victims in modern history.” According to UNRWA data, 10 children in Gaza lose a limb every day as a result of attacks.

UNRWA Commissioner General, Philippe Lazzarini, highlighted the lack of prosthetic limbs and rehabilitation centers for amputation victims, making it difficult for them to regain hope. The Israeli army has targeted and destroyed essential facilities like Hamed Hospital and Gaza Prosthesis Center, further exacerbating the situation.

Since October 7, 2023, the attacks by Israel on the Gaza Strip have resulted in the deaths of 46,006 Palestinians, including 17,841 children and 12,298 women. Additionally, 109,378 people have been injured, further emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian support in Gaza.
