Tips for Minimizing Winter Sinusitis Symptoms

Ways to reduce sinusitis complaints that increase in winter months
With the onset of winter, upper respiratory tract diseases such as sinusitis tend to increase. Sinusitis, if left untreated, can lead to serious complications such as pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, and middle ear infections. Sometimes, it may even cause problems in organs such as the eyes or brain.
According to Ear Nose and Throat Diseases Specialist Op. Dr. İsmet Çerçi, sinusitis can greatly affect the quality of life and is most frequently seen in the winter months. Some of the main symptoms of sinusitis include nasal congestion, sore throat, mild fever, weakness and adaptation difficulties, throbbing headache around the eyes and face, yellow-green discharge from the nose and nasal passages, and a bad smell and taste in the mouth.
To prevent sinusitis, individuals should take certain precautions. Dr. İsmet Çerçi advises those with allergies to not neglect their treatment and to keep their allergies under control. Additionally, it is important to stay away from environments with cigarette smoke and polluted air, as these can trigger sinusitis. Ensuring that the humidity level of the inhaled air is at appropriate levels can also help in preventing sinusitis.
For chronic cases of sinusitis, surgery may be necessary to open the blockages in the sinuses. However, Dr. İsmet Çerçi also warns that if a patient has severe nasal allergy and their condition is not well monitored with medication after surgery, sinusitis may recur.
It is important to be mindful of these precautions, especially during the winter months, in order to minimize the risk of sinusitis and the impact it can have on one’s health and quality of life.
