Tokat Village Divided
The village of Günebakan in the Niksar district of Tokat, Turkey, was split in two after a series of landslides on February 4th. These landslides caused the road, which connects the west and east sides of the village, to shift 3 meters to the south, along with several houses. As a result, 40 houses, 1 mosque, 4 haystacks, and 12 barns had to be evacuated, with 4 houses and the mosque being demolished.
Tokat Governor Numan Hatipoğlu visited the affected region and provided an update on the situation, stating that the necessary evacuations were carried out promptly following the notification of potential landslide threats. He confirmed that geological engineers are currently assessing the area to determine the extent of the landslide’s impact and that alternative housing solutions are being explored. Governor Hatipoğlu assured citizens that the state is taking all necessary steps to address the situation and minimize the hardships faced by the affected residents.
