Tomatina Festival in Colombia: A Messy Tomato-Throwing Spectacle
Annual Tomatina Festival Held in Colombia’s Stumarchan
Hundreds of people participated in the 14th annual Tomatina Festival in the city of Stumarchan in Colombia’s Boyaca administrative region. Local farmers donated 40 tons of tomatoes, which were brought to the festival site by trucks. Participants threw the tomatoes at each other, painting themselves red. The event was concluded with officials spraying pressurized water to clean the participants’ clothes. The festival also featured cultural activities, parties, competitions, and mini-concerts.
Authorities emphasized that the tomatoes used in the festival were not suitable for consumption. However, the annual event has become a significant attraction for the region. Festivals such as the Tomatina Festival continue to promote cultural tourism and contribute to the local economy.
