Trump leads Biden in first poll of 2024 US presidential race.

US President Joe Biden’s approval rating has dropped to just over a third of Americans, according to a new Washington Post/ABC News poll released on Sunday. The survey also found that Biden is seven points behind his 2020 rival, former President Donald Trump. The poll paints a difficult picture for Biden, who is seeking a second term after his party’s strong performance in the 2022 midterm election last fall, which prevented the Republicans from taking over Congress’s upper house.
Biden’s approval rating remained at 36% in the new survey. The US President lags behind Trump by 44 points against 38 points in a hypothetical general election match for 2024, but there are many undecided Americans. Biden also trailed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis 37% to 42% in another hypothetical match.
More worrying than ever is the number of Americans concerned about Biden’s mental health. The Post/ABC poll found that Biden’s approval rating regarding mental capacity dropped six points in two months. Only 32% of respondents trust Biden to have the mental capacity to do his job. This is expected to be the Republican Party’s main point of attack in 2024. In contrast, 51% of Americans had this confidence in Biden’s candidacy in 2020.
The final survey was conducted between April 28 and May 3 with 1006 adults living in the United States, with a margin of error of 3.5%.
In an interview with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle on Friday, Biden was asked why he believes he is the best choice for the 2024 race, despite concerns about his age. “Because I’ve learned so much wisdom,” Biden replied. “I know more than the vast majority of society,” the President of the United States continued, boasting.
