Turkey’s CHP Regulation Congress Kicks Off with Özgür Özel Defending Turkey’s Interests Abroad
The Constitutional Congress of the Republican People’s Party has officially begun in Ankara, following the symbolic opening that took place in Sivas on the 105th anniversary of the Sivas Congress. The Congress was opened by CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, who delivered a powerful speech outlining the party’s achievements and vision for the future.
Özel highlighted the party’s commitment to empowering women and youth within the party administration and in candidacy for local governments. He emphasized the importance of defending Turkey’s interests on the international stage, as well as building stronger relationships with civil society, unions, and professional organizations.
The chairman also reflected on the party’s success in recent elections, where they emerged as the first party in Turkey with 38 percent of the votes. Özel attributed this victory to the party’s alliance strategy, which focused on connecting with the people rather than just political parties.
Moving forward, Özel emphasized the importance of unity within the party and society, urging delegates to think freely and make decisions based on their own beliefs. The Congress will see significant changes to the party’s statute, with nearly 20 articles set to be amended to strengthen the role of the Secretary General and introduce new rules for General President nominations.
Delegates, honorary board members, and former general chairmen were invited to the Congress, which has been named the “Second Century Change Congress.” Deputy Chairman Gökhan Zeybek is expected to be elected as the Chairman of the Council, and discussions will focus on the future direction of the party.
The draft statute also includes provisions for primary elections under different supervision systems, with some advocating for judicial oversight. Additionally, limits on consecutive terms for party board members will be introduced, with exceptions for those who enter primary elections.
Workshops will be held over the weekend to prepare for changes in the party program, as the Republican People’s Party looks to continue its path of progress and unity in the years to come.
