Turkey’s UN Mission Optimistic for Temporary Suspension of Grain Agreement

Effects of Russia’s Decision to End Black Sea Grain Initiative Discussed at UN Security Council Session
At a recent session of the UN Security Council, Özgür delivered a speech regarding the consequences of Russia’s decision to terminate the Black Sea Grain Initiative. The initiative, which had a stabilizing effect on global grain prices, was considered vital for global food security.
Özgür emphasized that the initiative played a crucial role in ensuring access to food, particularly for low-income countries struggling with famine. Moreover, he highlighted that the continuation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative is essential for the shared objective of combating global hunger and maintaining stable food prices.
Expressing concern over the complete termination of the initiative, Özgür acknowledged the efforts made by the UN Secretary General to facilitate the export of Russian food and fertilizer products. He appreciated the attempt to address both dimensions of the agreement simultaneously. However, Özgür indicated that there is still room for improvement and urged all parties involved to take further steps in this regard.
“We remain hopeful that the suspension of the grain agreement is temporary. It is our desire that operations resume promptly, meeting the needs and expectations of all parties,” Özgür stated. He reiterated Turkey’s commitment to continued cooperation with the UN and both sides. He also cautioned against unilateral actions that could jeopardize the possibility of resuming the initiative.
Özgür called for restraint from all parties during this process and emphasized the necessity of avoiding unilateral steps that could impede the resumption of the important initiative. The complete termination of the Black Sea Grain Initiative would have adverse effects on the global food market.
The discussion at the UN Security Council session sheds light on the significance of the Black Sea Grain Initiative and the need for its continuity. With the hopes of a temporary pause and a successful resolution, it is essential for all parties to work together to maintain global food security and stable food prices.
