Turkmenistan Leads Central Asia in Foreign Direct Investment from UAE

According to the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB), Turkmenistan has emerged as the top recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) from the United Arab Emirates among Central Asian countries. With a staggering 65.4% share of all UAE investments in the region, Turkmenistan has attracted a total of $8 billion in investments.

Central Asia continues to be a significant destination for UAE investments, with the region accounting for 98% of all Emirati investments in Eurasia in 2016. This trend has persisted, with Central Asia still receiving 96% of UAE investments in the first half of 2024. Investment projects in the region encompass various sectors, including energy, raw materials, construction, and other industries.

Following Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are the next largest recipients of UAE investments. Uzbekistan has received $2.2 billion (17.85% of total volume), while Kazakhstan has attracted $1.5 billion (12.3%).

The increasing economic collaboration between the UAE and Central Asian nations signifies a growing interest from Emirati companies in engaging with the region, particularly in strategically important sectors.

This development highlights the potential for further economic cooperation and mutually beneficial partnerships between the UAE and Central Asia.
