Ukraine seeks to uphold Black Sea grain agreement

Ukrainian President Wants to Continue Black Sea Grain Deal Without Russia

Baku, July 17 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his desire to continue the implementation of the Black Sea grain deal without the involvement of Russia. This decision comes after Russia announced the suspension of its participation in the grain deal, as reported by Anadolu Agency.

Zelensky stated that upon receiving Russia’s official signal regarding the suspension, he instructed the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry to prepare official signals to the United Nations and Turkey. The purpose of these signals is to determine whether these parties are willing to continue with Ukraine’s initiative.

In an interview with African journalists, Zelensky highlighted that the grain deal consists of two agreements. One agreement involves Ukraine, Turkey, and the United Nations, while the other includes Russia, Turkey, and the United Nations. Zelensky emphasized that Russia’s decision to suspend the agreement means it is breaking its commitments with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, rather than with Ukraine.

Zelensky expressed his determination to ensure the continued use of the grain corridor. He stated, “Everything must be done so that the grain corridor can be used.” He also mentioned that companies owning ships have approached Ukraine and expressed their readiness to continue supplying grain if Ukraine permits and Turkey allows shipments.

Earlier, the Kremlin announced the suspension of Russia’s participation in the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which was scheduled to expire on Monday.

It remains to be seen how the other parties involved, including Turkey and the United Nations, will respond to Ukraine’s proposal to continue the grain deal without Russia’s involvement.
