UN Extends Afghanistan Mission Mandate for One More Year
The United Nations Security Council Unanimously Accepts Resolution on Afghanistan
The draft resolution voted on at the Afghanistan session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has been accepted unanimously. The decision maintains the duties and powers of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and expresses full support for the work of UN Special Representative for Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, as well as UNAMA.
The resolution underlines the crucial role of UNAMA and other UN agencies, funds, and programs in Afghanistan, emphasizing the need for their continued presence in the country. Additionally, the decision calls for the UN Secretary-General to provide a report every three months on the general situation in Afghanistan.
UNAMA’s term of office has been extended until March 17, 2025, as stated in the resolution. Established in 2002 by UNSC resolution No. 1401, UNAMA has seen annual extensions of its mandate and currently operates with approximately 1200 personnel from its headquarters in Kabul.
The unanimous acceptance of this resolution by the UNSC highlights the ongoing commitment of the international community to supporting peace, stability, and development in Afghanistan. The work of UNAMA and its partners remains crucial in achieving these goals and addressing the challenges faced by the Afghan people.
