Israel’s Military Operation in Gaza Must Respect International Law, Says UN Deputy Spokesperson
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq has addressed the ongoing military operation by Israel in and around Shifa hospital in Gaza, emphasizing the need for all parties involved to adhere to international humanitarian law. Haq highlighted the importance of protecting civilian infrastructure, including civilians and hospitals, in the conflict.
During a daily press conference, Haq pointed out the dire situation faced by the people in Gaza, who are experiencing high levels of disease and hunger. He mentioned that the UN and its humanitarian partners are working tirelessly to provide assistance to those in need. However, the efforts are being hampered by security risks, continuous bombardment, lack of civil order, and access barriers, particularly in the northern region.
Haq stressed the urgent need to deliver aid to Gaza, where people are on the brink of famine. He called for an end to the conflict and urged all parties to comply with the rules of war, as well as provide safe, sustainable, and unconditional access to aid organizations.
According to reports, since October 7, Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip have resulted in the deaths of 31,988 Palestinians, including thousands of children and women, with 74,188 people sustaining injuries. There are still thousands of individuals trapped under rubble, and essential civilian infrastructure such as hospitals and educational institutions are being targeted and destroyed.
The situation in Gaza remains critical, and international efforts are needed to ensure the protection and well-being of civilians in the region. The UN continues to call for a cessation of hostilities and the provision of humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict.
